#Life is unfair for #success, so #TryHard

Life is unfair. You need to be not only smart and diligent but also lucky for success.

If you are only smart and diligent, then you will end up working for the ones who are smart and diligent and lucky.

If you are diligent and lucky, then you will end up working for the ones who are smart and diligent but not lucky.

If you are only smart or only diligent, then your life is screwed.

So, try hard.

Palau, Nha Trang, Sydney, Guam, Hawaii, New Caledonia, Fiji, American Samoa, French Polynesia, and more...

A big change is coming to my life, and now it's time to make a decision. I will soon move back to Korea and travel a lot.

The first stop? I must decide on a summer vacation spot for July!!

There are sooooo many places I want to visit, and they are all good, so it's a such a difficult decision to make..

My first option is Palau. It's only about 5 hours away from Seoul, and there isn't anything to do! I'm sure all I can do there is "rest".

Others in the list are: French Polynesia, Fiji, American Samoa, New Caledonia, Nha Trang and Guam. French Polynesia seems to be the best place by far, while it takes close to 18 hours to get there.

There is no doubt that if there was a direct flight for about 14 hours to French Polynesia, I will not consider any other places.

Fiji could be the 2nd best option - there is a direct flight with duration of 10 hours. I think it can be a perfect vacation place, while mom's telling us that Fiji wasn't as good as expected, while she was on a golf tour about 5 years ago.

New Caledonia and American Samoa look very good option too, while Guam and Hawaii are more famous vacation places among Koreans.

Some are suggesting Nha Trang, but my concern is that places Southeast Asia are probably hot and humid during summer.

Well, why would it matter if I'm only staying in the hotel room & balcony with AC on? Maybe I'll end up resting at the cheapest place...

Welcome to America

A couple weeks ago, the professor released midterm grades. I thought I did horrible and was a bit depressed. Two weeks later, all of sudden, I got curious about how others in the class did, so I asked my smart brother about average and standard deviation.

It has been 10+ years already since I had my last class in statistics, so the term mean, median, average, standard deviation, blah, blah are the whole new world to me now.

The conversation started off by asking "If the average is 75, and standard deviation is 15, can you guess max/min?"

My brother responded that the highest is probably low-90s and the lowest is in 50s, while most were probably on the right side of 75.

OK, he lost me right there.... so let me give him the real numbers... and I did.

Two things:

Fear

People are generally afraid of something. The dictionary defines fear as an emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc.

This term is probably more suitable if a person is trying to do something (i.e. start up a mobile app business or open a radio store), and the person may be afraid of the failing.

Depending on how you define fear, you will either reach the end line or stay at the start line.
