Palau, Nha Trang, Sydney, Guam, Hawaii, New Caledonia, Fiji, American Samoa, French Polynesia, and more...

A big change is coming to my life, and now it's time to make a decision. I will soon move back to Korea and travel a lot.

The first stop? I must decide on a summer vacation spot for July!!

There are sooooo many places I want to visit, and they are all good, so it's a such a difficult decision to make..

My first option is Palau. It's only about 5 hours away from Seoul, and there isn't anything to do! I'm sure all I can do there is "rest".

Others in the list are: French Polynesia, Fiji, American Samoa, New Caledonia, Nha Trang and Guam. French Polynesia seems to be the best place by far, while it takes close to 18 hours to get there.

There is no doubt that if there was a direct flight for about 14 hours to French Polynesia, I will not consider any other places.

Fiji could be the 2nd best option - there is a direct flight with duration of 10 hours. I think it can be a perfect vacation place, while mom's telling us that Fiji wasn't as good as expected, while she was on a golf tour about 5 years ago.

New Caledonia and American Samoa look very good option too, while Guam and Hawaii are more famous vacation places among Koreans.

Some are suggesting Nha Trang, but my concern is that places Southeast Asia are probably hot and humid during summer.

Well, why would it matter if I'm only staying in the hotel room & balcony with AC on? Maybe I'll end up resting at the cheapest place...

Welcome to America

A couple weeks ago, the professor released midterm grades. I thought I did horrible and was a bit depressed. Two weeks later, all of sudden, I got curious about how others in the class did, so I asked my smart brother about average and standard deviation.

It has been 10+ years already since I had my last class in statistics, so the term mean, median, average, standard deviation, blah, blah are the whole new world to me now.

The conversation started off by asking "If the average is 75, and standard deviation is 15, can you guess max/min?"

My brother responded that the highest is probably low-90s and the lowest is in 50s, while most were probably on the right side of 75.

OK, he lost me right there.... so let me give him the real numbers... and I did.

Two things:

Fear

People are generally afraid of something. The dictionary defines fear as an emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc.

This term is probably more suitable if a person is trying to do something (i.e. start up a mobile app business or open a radio store), and the person may be afraid of the failing.

Depending on how you define fear, you will either reach the end line or stay at the start line.

혹독한 겨울, 혹독했던 2월.

눈이 유난히도 많이 내리는 이번 겨울은 참으로 혹독합니다. 작년에는 눈이 안내려서 주정부가 예산도 많이 남아서 올해는 세금좀 덜 걷어도 되겠다는 농담아닌 농담을 하기도 했지요.

2014년 12월만 해도 눈이 별로 안내려서 신기해했고, 2015년이 시작하고 1월 9일 새벽에 눈이 왔을때도 이번 겨울은 눈이 조금씩만 내려서 허리가 괜찮아 행복하다고 했는데 말이죠.

눈이 내리긴 내렸지만 뭐 그렇게 춥지도 않고, 이번 겨울 살만하겠네 이러고 있었지요. 사진 보고 이쁘다며 오고싶어하던 고향 친구들도 꽤 있었고...

한달 뒤, 눈이 조금 더 왔지만 아직까진 별 걱정 안하고 있었습니다.

정확히 한달 뒤, 눈이 쬐끔 더 오긴 했지만 그래도 이정도면 뭐, 아직까진 괜찮은 날씨였습니다. 내복 입을 필요도 없고, 눈도 녹아서 잠시 쌓였지만 낮에 기온이 올라가면 다 녹기도 했고요. 

'이번 겨울은 잘 보내겠구나...' 하고 있는데, 아니나 다를까, 2월은 저를 실망시키지 않고, 15년전 처음 왔을 때의 그 혹독함을 다시 한번 몸으로 느낄 수 있게 해주었습니다.

역대 최악의 눈보라 (뉴스에서 snowstorm이라고 했는데, 아마 우리나라 식으로 얘기하면 폭설이겠죠?)가 친다고 미디어에서 그렇게 쌩난리를 쳤음에도 불구하고 저는 '훗~' 하며 넘어갔는데 오.마이.갓... 

또 한달 뒤. 회사가 이틀 쉬어서 재택근무했다고 해도,
저 차 주인은 출근은 둘째치고 아마 폐차시켜야하지 않을까요ㅠ

30cm가 넘는 폭설이 격주로, 자잘한 눈 (이라고 해도 10cm 이상)이 이틀마다 한번씩 내리는 겁니다. 뭐, 덕분에 좋았던 점은 회사도 이틀정도 닫아서 집에서 편하게 재택근무 하기도 했고... 그래도 제 허리는 삽질을 하느라 척추뼈가 1번부터 20번까지 아우성을 칩니다 ㅠ_ㅠ

어느 몰 주차장. 눈어림 쉽게 미니가 마침 세워져 있네요ㅋㅋ

이렇게 큰 눈을 몇번 겪고 나니, 회사에서 텔레컨퍼런스할때 사람들이 눈 걱정을 해줘도 5일동안 눈 안내려서 괜찮다고 나도 모르게 대답을 하고, 사실 어젯밤에 눈이 내렸다고 상기시켜주니 'we don't count snow dust from now on'이라는 개드립도 쳐보고.

저번주 금요일만 해도 신기록까지 5.6인치 (약 14cm)남았다고, 주말에 또 눈내린다고....

이번 주말동안 총 9cm정도 내렸습니다. 다음주면 서머타임이 시작하는데 신기록을 과연 깰 수 있을지 두고봐야겠습니다. 현재 일기예보상으론 목요일에도 눈이 내리고 다음주 수요일에도 눈이 내린다는데, 열흘동안 일기예보가 얼마나 맞을지...
